Getting There
Fire Island is a narrow barrier island running along the southern shore of Long Island. The Pines is one of several small beach communities on Fire Island, approximately 60 miles east of New York City.
To get there, you will need to make your way – by air, train or car – to Sayville, New York and then take a short 20 minute ferry ride to Fire Island Pines.
The trip can be done as a day trip, and our wedding reception will end in time for guests to catch the ferry back to Long Island, as necessary.
By Air
The closest airport by far is the Long Island MacArthur Airport (Islip). Southwest and US Airways provide service. From the airport, it is about 2 miles to the hotel we are recommending and 6 miles to the Sayville Ferry Service terminal. Alternatively, you can fly into New York’s La Guardia or JFK airports and drive or take the train from New York City to the Sayville Ferry Service terminal. See below for instructions on what to do once you get to the ferry dock.
By Train
From New York City’s Pennsylvania Station, take the Long Island Railroad to Sayville. Check the LIRR Web site (http://www.mta.info/lirr/) for schedules. The train ride takes about 90 minutes, and you likely will need to change trains at Jamaica or Babylon station. When you get off of the train in Sayville, there are $5 shuttle vans that meet each train and will drive you to the Sayville Ferry Service terminal. See below for instructions on what to do once you get to the ferry dock.
By Car
Depending on traffic in the summer, the drive from New York City to Sayville can take from 90 minutes to 3 hours. Use your GPS device or see Google maps (click here) to get to the Sayville Ferry Service terminal. There is a paid parking lot across the road from the ferry dock. See below for instructions on what to do once you get to the ferry dock.
From the Sayville Ferry Service Dock
During the summer, there is regular ferry service from Sayville to Fire Island Pines. The boat ride takes about 20 minutes. Check the Sayville Ferry Service Web site (http://www.sayvilleferry.com/schedule-pines.php) for the ferry schedule. Be sure to take the ferry going to the Pines, not the one to Cherry Grove. See below for directions once you arrive on Fire Island
From the Fire Island Pines Ferry Dock
Once you arrive in the Pines, you will be about a 5 minute walk to Whyte Hall. Click here to see which way to walk.
You should head west on Fire Island Boulevard. If you are unsure which way to go, just ask one of the many friendly Fire Islanders to direct you to the Community Center. Walk along Fire Island Boulevard past the fire department, past Lone Hill Walk, past Pine Walk, and past Beach Hill Walk. From Beach Hill Walk, the Whyte Hall Community Center will be the second building ahead on the left side of Fire Island Boulevard, just before Coast Guard Walk. If you reach Tuna Walk, you have gone too far.
